We were surfing this morning, and found this very nice Boating Blog out in Tennessee. The people are all volunteers and they seem to have many of the same issues that the KYC Club has, I guess all clubs do. So, the grass is not always greener in the hills. That Club seems to have a good mix of power and sailing vessels within the membership and we could not help notice that they make a point to say volunteer member.
A few years ago, I stopped at West Marine for some items for my sailboat, and as I am walking the store, the gentlemen working that day, asked if he could be of assistance. After helping me find what I was looking for, we started to walk towards the register, he then asked me where I was from, I replied the Keyport Yacht Club. He asked me, "your a sailor"? Me not knowing where line of questioning was going, I said "sure why". He said, you just spent 300 dollars in about 10 minutes. Still surprised "I asked" and why is that unusual? He stated that the people, that come from the KYC Club, come into the store and usually ask a 100 questions, and then leave rarely actually purchasing anything. I said to him, is that true, and he said "definitely". "They have problems parting with the dollar".I found it a little strange but I was relatively new in the Club at the time, and as I got to know people better I still think that story was true. A majority of the members are retired, on a fixed income, so I could see the point ,and shopping around is not a bad thing is it?
As I talk to my parents more and more now that they are older, when they grew up it was a luxury just to have food for the table. So, if you had a nice meal everyday you were considered lucky.
We have to assume that the younger crowd, cannot appreciate those days simply because they never lived in those times. As soon as the younger people get a dollar in their pocket, they all run out and purchase the biggest cars, and the biggest houses, mortgaged to the hilt. We call this new money! As in, they just started making it and spend it just as fast.
My parents have this friend Phil, and if you were to meet him you wouldnt give the guy a second look. No flashy car no expensive clothes. Phil is a straight millionaire, with ridiculous money, but when he pulls up at your driveway with his 72 Dodge Dart thats all smashed in the back with a tail light purchased from Pep Boys screwed into the rear quarter panel. You say to yourself where did he get that piece of crap to drive around.Phil, like many people is old money, no flash, but plenty of cash.
